Why Hire An Appraiser?

Need to correctly identify and value your important pieces? Are they authentic, fake, reproduction or overly restored? Do you know the difference between an auction estimate and an appraisal? In this economy, are you being forced to sell? At what price? Concerned you may be over or under insured? When is a formal appraisal required? Thinking about a making a donation and receiving a tax deduction? What does the IRS expect to see in a properly prepared appraisal? If you have questions like these, I can help you.

I have over 25 years of experience appraising art, antiques and other personal property for all purposes including: insurance, estates and probate, donation, deconstruction, divorce, buy and sell advice, litigation support, expert witness, bankruptcy, damage and loss, blockage discount, collateral loans, restoration and appraisal review.

Qualifications

Education includes a BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design and a MPS from New York University plus years of hands-on experience. I am a long time member of the Appraisers Association of America and all appraisals are compliant with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). Grew up in the business (mother was an antiques dealer after being a museum curator) and did major antique shows around the USA for many years. Owned and operated shops in various locations in New York and New England. Bought and sold material via all venues. Articles and photographs have appeared in numerous publications, plus I participated in the Antiques Roadshow (PBS television) for several years. Clients include collectors, corporations, museums, attorneys, banks, insurance companies and individuals with the need to know what they have and what it is worth. The values of the objects appraised has ranged from worthless to $30 million for a single item and over $120 million for a collection. I also maintain a reference library of several thousand volumes.
